OK - so the above is the canned new-base blurb but now I'm adding text about what I hope to be an interesting and productive base building experience. Full disclosure: I have not yet attended Burning Man and for that reason I will be limiting some of my activities on this base, However, I do plan to attend this year and hope to use this base to enrich that experience. Anyone who has followed any of my work on freebase know that I am a rather prodigious collector of data and images so it will be hard for me to hold back. While I will collect readily available facts I am trying not to contribute any images until I attend this year (2009). My main goal is to seek outside contributions to this base.

If you are new to freebase I'm about to use some terms that you might not be familiar with (base, type, topic, recurring event, exhibition, location, schema, etc.) in the context of freebase. they are well defined and there are lots of resources here to learn about them - but feel free to ask in the discussion section below.

What I've done so far:

* Named the base

* Typed the existing topic Burning Man as a recurring event

* Created topics for each instance from 1986 to 2009

* Co-typed each instance as an exhibition

* Entered the location of each event as Baker beach for 1986-1990 and Black Rock Desert for 1990 to 2009

* I created a location called Black Rock City but have not applied it to anything yet as I wonder if it should be one dated location if it is really a new dated location each year. Food for discussion

* I have intentionally only used existing types so far and have resisted building a Burning Man specific schema. I'm not the person to do that for this base - but can help guide the discussion.

I'm going to send emails today to my co-workers and friends who have attended prior Burning Man events asking those interested to join the base as members and start telling their friends as well. I am actively looking for an additional administrator or two who have actually attended - preferably a number of times.

As I said, I am going to try and avoid adding images so if people would start adding an image or two *of your own* to the appropriate year event that would be very cool. If someone wants to contribute a banner or even make a mark on the visual design of this base - let me know. Please do fill in missing dates and add information and images on art exhibits. Most important - pass this along to people who are not Metaweb staff and lets see how this evolves.
